The Honeywell HM R3200/HMR3300 a re di gital compass
solutions for use in p
recision hea ding appli cations.
Honeywell’s magn etoresistive sensors a re util ized to
provide the reliability and accu racy of these small, solid
state com pass d esigns. These compass soluti ons a re
designed for gene ric p recision comp ass integ ration into
customer systems usi ng a 5-voltage logic level se rial data
interface with commands in ASCII format.
The HMR3200 is a two-ax is p recision compass with three
orthogonal m agnetoresistive se nsors, and can b e used in
either vertical or horizontal orientations.
The HMR33 00 in cludes a MEMS accele rometer f or a h orizontal three -axis, tilt compen sated preci sion com pass f or

Other n asty magnetic env ironments a re man -made AC and DC magnetic fie lds created from nea rby motors an d high
current conductors. These fields should also require compass or source relocation when possible. In some cases, ferrous
metal shielding may help if the shield material is thin and far enough away from the compass.
Hard-iron di stortion can be calibrated o ut, and is co mposed of soft-iron s that are al so ma gnetized and create re mnant
(stray) m agnetic flux. Cla ssic hard-iron dist ortion typically com es from la rge vehicl e chassis compo nents and e ngine
blocks that h ave up to ±2 gau ss on th e pa rts. L ocating the compass away from ha rd and soft-i rons i s the first li ne of
defense to preserve accuracy, and the calibration routine will null out the remaining hard-iron influences.
Calibration Procedure
For the HMR3200, one complete turn in a l evel plane is the b est way to expose the sensors to all headings to compute
the calibration offsets. Since the compass collects data at a 15 sa mples per second rate, a sample per degree of rotation
or slower is a good guideline. If slo w turns are not p ossible, multiple faster turns are a g ood substitute. Th e goodness of
the calibration or the amo unt of hard-i ron present is found by checking the Xof, Yof, and Zof values af ter the calib ration
routine i s complete. In kn own clean magnetic environments, th e horizontal values (XY = l evel, YZ = u pright) shoul d be
±200 A DC counts o r less in these offset variabl es. Sending th ese Xof, Yof, and Zof valu es ba ck to zero return s t he
compass to the factory calibration state. The vertical axis values can be zero set or ignored for the HMR3200.
For the HMR3300, the above described level turns will calibrate the XY axis’, but the Z -axis must also be calibrated as
well On e full rotation with as much pitch an d roll variati on in cluded a s appli cation allo ws. If only mild pitch and ro ll
variations a re po ssible, complete th e le vel rotation s, exit t he calibration routin e, and force the Zof val ue to zero. So me
accuracy maybe lost in this zeroing, but the mild tilt would likely never cause serious tilt-compensation heading error.
UART COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL
HMR3200/HMR3300 modules communicate through ASCII characters with the * or # characters as start bytes. The data
bit format is 1 Start, 8 Data, 1 Stop, and No parity bits. Factory baud rate is set to 19,200. Asynchronous communication
has the complete me nu o f comm ands. Synch ronous communication is limite d to direct h eading queries a nd n o oth er
commands.
POWER-ON/RESET
The compasses require a hard power-on tr ansition on th e p ower supply voltage to serve as an internal hardware reset
and clock-start. Some bench power supplies may create a soft-start condition and the HMR3200/HMR3300 my react with
a co nstant-on LED illu mination if not reset sudde nly. An in- line power supply swit ch (mechanical o r el ectrical) may be
required when prototyping to avoid soft-starts.
Upon ap plication of po wer or after a Reset Comm and, the HMR3200/HMR3300 will ru n about a n 80 0 milli-se cond
initialization routine to set the onboar d hardware and grab EEPROM variabl es and shadow them in controller RAM
locations for operation. The LED will illuminate during the routine and extinguish upon completion.
INITIAL STATUS OUTPUT
The HMR3200/HMR3300 will begin sending ASCII characters immediately after the initialization routine ends and the LED
extinguishes. The first line of text will be the model number of the compass and the internal firmware revision number. For
the HMR3300, a second response string will be sent, starting with a # character and either the N, W or A characters. The
#N response indicates no rmal o peration and is th e alwa ys exp ected response from the HMR3200. T he # W a nd #A
responses a re only for the HMR330 0, and indi cate the lo w tem perature warning an d ala rm enviro nments ha d be en
encountered. These responses will be reset to normal when the user sends the pit ch and roll re-zero commands to re-
calibrate the MEMS accelerometer for best tilt-compensation performance and accurate tilt indications.
After initialization, the compa sses a utomatically begin streaming hea ding or mag netometer o utput data at 15Hz
(HMR3200) or 8Hz (HMR3300). Users must send a start/stop command (*S) to exit continuous streaming data, and to get
the controller’s full attention to the next commands.

COMPASS DEMONSTRATION KIT
The HMR3200 or HMR3300 Demo kit includes additional hardware and Windows software to form a development kit f or
electronic co mpassing. Th is kit in cludes the HMR3200 or HMR3300 Printe d Ci rcuit Bo ard (PCB) mo dule as a daughter
board, a TTL to RS-232 motherboard with a D9 serial port connector, 6’ serial port cable with attached AC adapter power
supply, and a Win dows d emo softwa re CD with d ocumentation. The ca ble i s a 4 -wire d esign with pi ns 2 and 3 NOT
flipped (DTE to DCE, not null mode m) with pin 5 a s the grou nd refere nce. Pin 9 is the u nregulated p ositive voltag e
reference an d is factory connected to the AC ada pter. Ei ther cable sid e ma y be used fo r the comp ass d emo kit or
computer serial port.
The AC ada pter is a unive rsal type and factory set for 120 VAC input, 9 volt DC output, and positive pola rity. Users ca n
rewire th e ca ble for battery operation f or remote usage. Ba tteries cho sen must apply the required 6 to 15 volt supp ly
range with at least 24mA current capability. If compact 9 volt batteries are used, it is recommended that two batteri es of
the same chemistry be wired in parallel to have reasonable operational life.
The T TL to RS-232 m otherboard i s de signed to ha ndle only unregulated po wer supply voltage s a nd routes the suppl y
directly to the V+ pin of th e HMR3200 or HMR3300 daughterboard. The ele ctronics on th e motherboard convert the RX
and TX 5 volt logic to the ±6 volt RS-232 drive logic for computer serial ports.
